Tokyo Seminar 2009
Valens Semiconductor Hosts Demonstration Seminar for Major Japanese CE Manufacturers in Tokyo
Guest speakers from DCP LLC and the MPAA convey HDBaseT’s content protection and security for distributing premium Hollywood content
HOD HASHARON, Israel – March 19, 2009 – Valens Semiconductor, a fabless semiconductor company that enables distribution of multimedia content in the high growth high definition (HD) home entertainment market through HDBaseT™ technology, recently hosted a demonstration seminar in Tokyo for more than 40 guests from all of the major Japanese consumer electronics manufacturers.
Companies that were represented included Sony, Toshiba and Sharp, as well as guest speakers Stephen Balogh, president of Digital Content Protection LLC (DCP), and Jim C. Williams, senior vice president and CTO of The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
Valens gave an overview of market needs and demonstrated why its HDBaseT technology is positioned as the new digital connectivity standard for multimedia distribution. HDBaseT enables the convergence and the high quality transmission of uncompressed HD video, audio, Internet, power and controls in the home environment via a single LAN cable, while providing high levels of content protection and security for premium Hollywood content.
Stephen Balogh, president of Digital Content Protection LLC (DCP), told the audience that HDBaseT has been approved for use with digital content protected by the High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) specification. All video data transmitted over HDBaseT is HDCP protected.
“We began working with Valens early in their development process to ensure HDBaseT satisfies its intended broad range of consumers while protecting against piracy, thereby providing Hollywood a level of comfort that its security expectations have been addressed,” said Jim Williams, senior vice president and CTO of MPAA.
“By working early with the MPAA, it was easy for Valens to include content protection tools without impacting the performance of our product. For example, Valens is committed to requiring HDCP content protection on HDBaseT and our design incorporates additional tools to protect against unlawful re-transmission beyond the home,” said Dror Jerushalmi, CEO of Valens Semiconductor.
Valens showed seminar participants the first ever 5Play demonstration of HDBaseT by sending uncompressed 1080P HD video, audio, Internet USB controls and power via a single 100m Cat5e cable, allowing video and Internet at the same time on a 50 inch LCD TV.
“The seminar was an important milestone for Valens as it brings us one step forward in the process of establishing HDBaseT as the next digital connectivity standard,” said Jerushalmi. “We were impressed by the enthusiasm of the participants once we demonstrated how you can access YouTube at the same time you watch a Blu-ray movie with a standard Internet-enabled TV, all via a single 100m Cat5e cable. The 5Play demonstration is another example of the supremacy of HDBaseT over existing technologies and the value it brings to the entire industry.
” The company also demonstrated the concept of a remote terminal which allows the user to connect a PC to the TV using a 100m Cat5e cable, as well as connect the mouse, USB drive and keyboard directly to the TV.
Valens explained to manufacturers how HDBaseT enables the following:
- Internet-enabled TV – HDBaseT’s single cable connectivity carries both HD video and Internet.
- Shift to Green CE Devices – The vision of powering a Blu-ray player or a slim monitor through the same cable that delivers the HD video and Internet content can become a reality with HDBaseT when up to 30Watts can be sent simultaneously with video, audio and Internet.
- Slim TVs – The number of connectors is reduced with an external box that has multiple inputs for various devices, such as Blu-ray and game consoles, and is connected to the TV via a single Cat5e cable.
- HD Multimedia Home Distribution – When it comes to cost effectiveness, seamless integration and future upgradeability, uncompressed content is the best alternative. HDBaseT enables uncompressed HD video distribution with full home coverage.
