Best Buy Installs HDBaseT Technology In New Store Citing Easy Installation And Low Cost

BEST BUY INSTALLS HDBASET TECHNOLOGY IN NEW STORECITING EASY INSTALLATION AND LOW COST

HDBaseT connectivity selected to cost effectively meet Best Buy’s high performance needs over longer distances−reinforcing HDBaseT’s future as the preferred digital connectivity standard within the industry

BEAVERTON, Ore.—September 7, 2011— The HDBaseT Alliance, the cross-industry alliance formed to promote and standardize HDBaseT™ technology for whole-home distribution of uncompressed high-definition (HD) multimedia content, today announced Best Buy, the largest consumer electronics retailers in the United States, selected HDBaseT for installation in its new, Chicago-area test store.

Best Buy installed HDBaseT technology to cost-effectively carry a high-quality video from source equipment to displays throughout the store. By converging the 5Play™ feature set−uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over cable and various control signals−through a single LAN cable, HDBaseT was implemented easily, economically and met the store’s distance requirements by enabling runs up to 100m.

“Large scale installations can become quite costly and complex, requiring several cable runs, bundling multiple cables. HDBaseT was a clear choice for Best Buy in overcoming just such a challenge,” said Brent Newman, Senior Manager, Technology Design, Best Buy. “HDBaseT helped us solve a technical problem, providing all necessary video functions over a single, long-distance, low cost cable. Since the installation, the technology has performed flawlessly and is now expected to be installed in other Best Buy stores.”

“This adoption by Best Buy is a prime example of how HDBaseT technology is progressing within the digital connectivity market,” said Micha Risling, Marketing Chair, HDBaseT Alliance. “HDBaseT technology is the ideal solution for a variety of installations from living rooms to airports, and is not only well positioned to make the installer’s life simpler, but is also staged to become the industry’s connectivity standard of choice.”

 HDBaseT Technology and Installer Challenges

HDBaseT technology solves key installer demands for a simple, cost efficient solution applicable in a wide variety of installation scenarios.

  • Distance is no longer a concern: HDBaseT technology can send its 5Play feature set up to 100m/328ft and supports runs in either daisy chain or start topologies.

  • Power over cable eliminates the electrician: HDBaseT technology sends up to 100w of power through a single cable, untethering the display from the power outlet and providing increased installer flexibility.

  • Installation is low cost: When compared to a traditional installation including separate HDMI, IR, RS232 and LAN cables, the cost savings for an HDBaseT installation in cables alone is substantial. A traditional installation costs approximately $13 per foot, not including the added cost of repeaters for solving distance limitations, while using HDBaseT technology sent over a single LAN cable costs less than 10 cents per foot.
